Technical Minute - Condenser

Pitting and rust on cooling tower coils

Scale Formation & Leaks

Do you have scale on your coils?  In the picture you see scale all over the coils and white scale pits along these coils.  This is an ammonia leak.  It is not detectable as it dissolves in the water.  The high dollar controller is increasing acid feed and blowdown to control.  No one even knew there was a leak.  The scale was built up over time but had a simple mass balance been completed and adjustments made to the program no scale would be visible on these condenser coils. Sustainachem focuses on mass balances to know when scale is forming, what type of scale and then adjusts to stop it before it is visible. Your coils should never have to look this way.

Corrosion & White Rust

Do you have visible white rust and corrosion on your condenser?  If so, why?  Did you know when it was occurring, or it just happened over time?  Most folks don't know that it is happening because they are blindly trusting their water treatment representative.  This photo is a prime example of what happens when the tests are ran based on a program and not on results.  If the right tests would have been run, the site would have known this was occurring and changes could have been made to prevent this damage.  At Sustainachem, we educate and partner with our customers to stop damage before it is visible.

Scale in Mist Eliminators

Do you have hard scale in your drift eliminators?  Have you been told it is just because of evaporation and a design issue?  If so, that is not true.  The fact is that if mass balances had been ran, your representative would have told you that calcium carbonate was forming and made the right adjustment to stop it.  If the treatment levels are correct, then the only precipitation that should occur is calcium phosphate which is soft and washes off easily.  Hard deposits are due to poor treatment.  At Sustainachem, we inform our customers when scale is forming and what type.  If we see calcium carbonate, we adjust the treatment, and if we see calcium phosphate we also adjust because calcium phosphate forms mud in your basin.  It isn't from the road, it is from overfeeding cooling water products.  Don't turn up the pump, figure out the issue and fix it.

Let us help.
